Baie-Johan-Beetz

Baie-Johan-Beetz, QC · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Gulf of St. Lawrence (Lower North Shore / Basse-Côte-Nord)

Baie-Johan-Beetz is a remote, federally owned port facility on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Lower North Shore / Basse-Cote-Nord), about 925 km downstream from Quebec City, owned and administered by Transport Canada (Quebec Region). The facility consists of a wharf built in 1970 from creosote-wood caissons with a concrete approach, plus an uninsulated Transport Canada hangar; the wharf historically received bulk petroleum products and general cargo for the local community until the early 2000s. It has been largely non-operational since the early 2000s, with vehicle access restricted in 2016 and pedestrian access closed in 2022 due to the wharf reaching the end of its useful life. Transport Canada is now the proponent of a demolition and environmental rehabilitation project to deconstruct the wharf, approach and hangar and remediate sediments and soils heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the creosote.
