Bear Head LNG / Bear Head Energy (proposed LNG terminal, cancelled and repurposed to green hydrogen/ammonia)

Point Tupper, NS · Private · Bear Head Energy Inc · Strait of Canso

NOT OPERATIONAL. Bear Head was a proposed LNG export terminal at Point Tupper / Bear Head on the Strait of Canso, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, originally advanced by LNG Limited / Bear Head LNG Corporation (with planned capacity of roughly 8.7-12 mtpa across 2-4 production trains). The LNG terminal and associated pipeline were effectively cancelled; in March 2023 the owner announced it was re-envisioning the site as a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage and loading facility, which received Nova Scotia environmental assessment approval in April 2023. The repurposed project, developed by Bear Head Energy Inc. (a wholly owned development of Buckeye Partners LP, acquired 2022), is permitted for up to 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity and at full build-out could produce up to 350,000 tonnes of hydrogen and ~2 million tonnes of ammonia per year, leveraging the Point Tupper Industrial Park's deep, year-round ice-free port on the Strait of Canso, with first deliveries targeted around 2028. No marine cargo is currently handled.
