Come By Chance

Come By Chance, NL · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Placentia Bay

Come By Chance is a Transport Canada public port in the north of Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (about 105 km west of St. John's), where Transport Canada administers the port limits over navigable waters but does not own or operate the cargo facilities. The dominant facility is a privately owned two-berth deep-water oil jetty serving the adjacent Come By Chance refinery, capable of handling tankers up to roughly 326,000 DWT (LOA 457 m, draft 27.4 m), with pilotage, tugs and bunkers available. It is one of Canada's largest oil-handling ports — in 2011 the associated port handled 27.4 million tonnes of cargo, of which 23.7 million tonnes was crude petroleum, ranking it fifth in Canada by tonnage. The refinery and jetty are operated by North Atlantic Refining Ltd, repurposed and rebranded as Braya Renewable Fuels, which began commercial production of renewable diesel in February 2024.
