Come By Chance (Braya) Refinery Terminal

Come By Chance, NL · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Placentia Bay (head of bay, Atlantic Ocean)

Come By Chance is a Transport Canada federal public port at the head of Placentia Bay on the Newfoundland isthmus, about 105 km west of St. John's, developed to serve a deep-water oil refinery and tanker terminal. The associated privately-operated two-berth oil jetty handles petroleum/renewable-fuel cargo and can accommodate very large tankers up to roughly 326,000 DWT (LOA ~457 m, draft ~27.4 m). The terminal serves the former North Atlantic refinery, now repurposed by Braya Renewable Fuels into a renewable-fuels plant that began commercial operations in February 2024 producing ~18,000 bpd of renewable diesel (with planned sustainable aviation fuel and green hydrogen). All feedstock (soybean oil, distiller's corn oil) arrives by ship and all finished product is shipped out via the on-site dock to North American and European markets. Historically the wider port was among Canada's largest by tonnage, handling crude petroleum at very high volumes.
