Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Marine Terminal (Port Mellon)
Port Mellon, BC · Private · Domtar · Howe Sound
The Howe Sound Pulp and Paper mill at Port Mellon is one of British Columbia's oldest operating pulp mills (rebuilt to modern standards in 1991) and a leading producer of high-quality Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp, with an annual capacity of roughly 380,000 air-dry metric tonnes used worldwide for tissue, paper towels, and fine writing paper. The site operates a private deep-sea marine terminal on Howe Sound (a tidal fjord off the Strait of Georgia, UN/LOCODE CAPML) used for inbound wood chips/supplies and outbound pulp; the company has consolidated multiple in-water and upland Crown tenures for chip transportation, unloading, and log handling/storage at the site. The mill employs about 350 people and is owned and operated by Domtar, which acquired the Paper Excellence pulp and paper assets; it generates roughly 90% of its energy from renewable sources and holds ISO 14001 and FSC/SFI certifications.
