Klemtu
Klemtu, BC · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Klemtu Passage / Finlayson Channel (Inside Passage), Pacific Ocean central coast
Klemtu is a Transport Canada remote public port facility on the east side of Swindle Island on BC's central coast, serving the Kitasoo/Xai'xais community of roughly 400-450 residents where marine transportation is the primary access mode. The public Transport Canada wharf is the village's commercial and transportation hub, fronted by a long boardwalk and surrounded by a general store, cafe, post office and a marine/auto fuel facility; it supports community resupply, the local fishing economy and small-vessel traffic. A separate, larger ferry berth and terminal (opened 2011, built by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) serves BC Ferries' Inside Passage and connector routes to Port Hardy, Prince Rupert, Bella Bella, Shearwater, Ocean Falls and Bella Coola. The community's main employer is the former China Hat Cannery, now operated by the Kitasoo/Xai'xais Nation.
