Les Mechins (Port of Les Méchins)
Les Méchins, QC · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · St. Lawrence River (Estuary)
Les Méchins is a Transport Canada-owned local/regional port facility on the south shore of the St. Lawrence estuary in the Matanie region of Quebec, roughly halfway between Montreal and Halifax. The site is dominated by a major ship-repair operation: the federal wharf (about 274 m long) and an associated dry dock (244 m long by 56 m wide) are used chiefly by the Verreault shipyard for floating repairs, refits and conversions of vessels transiting the St. Lawrence Seaway. The shipyard, founded in 1956 by Borromée Verreault, was acquired by Groupe Océan in October 2022 and now operates as Chantier maritime Océan Les Méchins, employing roughly 100 people and handling work such as dry-docking ferries for the Société des traversiers du Québec. The port is navigable year-round, with occasional icebreaker assistance.
