Milne Port is a private Arctic iron-ore export terminal on the north coast of Baffin Island, serving Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation's Mary River Mine. High-grade direct-shipping iron ore is trucked roughly 100 km from the mine over the Milne Inlet tote road to the port, which has been developed with an ore dock, a 3.5 million-tonne ore stockpile, a maintenance facility, and associated infrastructure. Bulk carriers (including ice-classed Panamax vessels of ~77,000 DWT) load ore and transit Milne Inlet and Eclipse Sound to open ocean for export to steelmakers in continental Europe, the UK, and occasionally Asia. Shipping is limited to the open-water season (roughly August to mid-October, about 90 days); an alternative all-season deep-water port at Steensby Inlet remains approved/planned but has not been built.
