Port of Churchill

Churchill, MB · Cooperative · Indigenous-affiliated · Arctic Gateway Group LP · Hudson Bay (west coast), connecting to the North Atlantic via Hudson Strait

The Port of Churchill is Canada's only deep-water Arctic seaport connected to the national rail network, located on the west coast of Hudson Bay and reaching the North Atlantic via Hudson Strait. It has four deep-sea berths capable of handling Panamax-size vessels for grain, bulk commodities, general cargo, energy products, forestry products/pellets and increasingly critical minerals, and serves as an Arctic sealift/resupply staging point for the Kivalliq region. It is owned and operated by Arctic Gateway Group LP — which also runs the Hudson Bay Railway (its rail link from The Pas) and the Churchill Marine Tank Farm — and since March 2021 has been 100% community- and Indigenous-owned through OneNorth, a partnership of 41 Indigenous and Bayside communities. The port operates on a seasonal basis tied to the Hudson Bay shipping window (roughly late July to early November).
