Port of Les Méchins

Les Méchins, QC · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · St. Lawrence River (south shore)

The Port of Les Méchins is a Transport Canada local/regional port facility on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, about 45 km east of Matane in the Matanie region of Quebec, and is listed under the federal Ports Asset Transfer Program (PATP) for transfer to local ownership. The site is adjacent to and closely associated with the Verreault shipyard (a roughly 900 ft / 274 m federal wharf with about 23 ft of water alongside at low water and an 800 ft / 244 m dry dock), which is the dominant marine activity in the community. The shipyard, founded in 1956 by Captain Borromée Verreault, specializes in ship repair, refit and conversion serving vessels operating on or transiting the St. Lawrence; it was acquired by Ocean Group (Groupe Océan) in October 2022, a transaction that also included two tugs servicing the Les Méchins and Matane docks. The port is not a major commercial cargo terminal but functions primarily as a marine services / ship-repair location on the lower St. Lawrence.
