Public Port of Baie-Johan-Beetz
Baie-Johan-Beetz, QC · Transport Canada · Transport Canada · Gulf of St. Lawrence (Lower North Shore)
Baie-Johan-Beetz is a remote public port wharf on the Lower North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, owned and managed by Transport Canada under its Ports Program (and listed under the Ports Asset Transfer Program). Built in 1970, the wharf received bulk petroleum products and general cargo for the local community until the early 2000s, serving as a community-resupply facility where marine transport was a primary access mode. Since 2016 the loading/unloading of goods, vehicle circulation, and ship mooring have been prohibited because the creosote-timber-caisson structure has badly deteriorated; pedestrian access was closed in 2022, though a few commercial fishermen occasionally still use it. Transport Canada now plans to demolish the wharf, approach, and an associated (unused, uninsulated) hangar, and remediate creosote/PAH-contaminated sediments and soil.
