Sarnia Harbour

Sarnia, ON · Municipal · City of Sarnia · St. Clair River / Lake Huron (St. Lawrence Seaway System, Great Lakes)

Sarnia Harbour is a working commercial port at the south end of Lake Huron on the eastern shore of the St. Clair River, part of the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Seaway System. It handles lake freighters and oceangoing vessels including tankers, bulk carriers, self-unloaders, tugs and barges, moving cargoes such as grain (Canadian grain bound for Europe), petroleum products from local Chemical Valley refineries, iron ore, rock salt and limestone; it also serves as the terminus of the regional Oversized Load Corridor for roll-on/roll-off transport of large industrial modules. Although historically a Transport Canada public port, ownership was divested to the City of Sarnia on March 28, 2014, and the municipally owned harbour is operated under contract by Great Lakes Shipping. The working harbour comprises three main areas — the Government Wharf and Warehouse Area, the East Dock, and the North Slip/Cestar Dock — with recent electrical upgrades, dredging, and a $4M Cestar College-funded dock expansion to accommodate larger vessels.
